I.5 Boundaries & Sustainable Effort – Workload Boundaries

Workload Boundaries help you protect your time, energy and attention so you can sustain your efforts across the school year. They create clarity about what matters most, reduce silent workload creep and build the confidence to choose a steady, sustainable pace. When used regularly, boundaries prevent overextension and support more focused, purposeful work.

SHIFT:

Micro Habit: The Stop Point Rule

Ask yourself:

Q. What is the stopping point for this task?
Q. What does good enough look like here?
Q. What action matters most right now?

If slipping → Reduce the task to one clear next step and complete only that.
If stretched → Protect your stop point with calm assertiveness.
If steady → Continue choosing stopping points that match the task’s true value.

Stopping points strengthen clarity and prevent silent workload creep.

DO:

  1. Decide what good enough looks like before starting a task.

  2. Set a realistic stopping point and honour it.

  3. Focus on one high-value action at a time.

  4. Notice when you are adding unnecessary extras.

  5. Keep a visible list of tasks that are yours and tasks that are not.

Boundaries create the conditions for purposeful effort.

TOOL:

The Workload Boundary Line

A simple tool that helps identify the dividing line between essential effort and diminishing returns. It encourages staff to name their stopping point, define good enough and prevent automatic overextension.

REFLECT:

  • Q. Where did I exceed a reasonable stopping point today?

  • Q. When did choosing good enough free up energy or clarity?

  • Q. Which task expanded unnecessarily and why?

E.g: I continued planning far beyond my stop point even though the lesson was already ready to teach.

Clarity grows when you notice the moments where boundaries slipped or held firm.

REPEAT:

Make it a habit

Choose one task each day to complete using a clear stopping point and a good enough benchmark.

Workload Boundaries protect your capacity, strengthen clarity and support sustained effort across the school year.
