I.2 Regulation & Recovery – Micro-Resets

Micro-Resets are small moments that help you return to clarity when the pace of the school day starts to take over. They interrupt autopilot, steady your thinking and restore enough balance to choose your next step with purpose. These brief, intentional pauses help you rebalance your thoughts, emotions and physical state. Used regularly, they prevent build up, lower emotional load and support clearer, more grounded decision making.

SHIFT:

Micro Habit: The Stop and Reset Cue

Ask yourself:

Q. What do I need to reset before I move forward
Q. What small shift would help me respond more clearly
Q. How do I want to show up in the next momentWhere is my capacity right now — steady, stretched, or slipping?

If slipping → Slow your breathing and name the next step you want to take.
If stretched → Use a clear mental cue such as “reset and continue”.
If steady → Keep using brief pauses to protect clarity.

A few seconds of reset can change the next ten minutes.

DO:

  1. Pause for a moment before responding during busy periods.

  2. Steady your posture and breathing when clarity dips.

  3. Use a simple phrase such as “reset” to interrupt autopilot.

  4. Take one intentional step before re-engaging with a task or conversation.

  5. Choose a consistent reset cue that fits naturally into your day.

Short pauses create space for better decisions.

TOOL:

The Micro-Reset Ladder

A simple tool offering three levels of quick resets: a one second pause, a five second physical reset or a ten second clarity shift.

It helps staff choose the right reset for the moment without slowing the flow of the day.

REFLECT:

Q. Which moment today would have benefited from a micro-reset?
Q. Where did a small pause help you regain clarity?
Q. What cue was most effective when the day became busy?

E.g: I regained clarity when I paused before giving a rushed response at lunchtime.

Clear moments come from small resets used consistently.

REPEAT:

Make it a habit

Choose one point in your day to practise a brief micro-reset so it becomes automatic when pressure rises.

Micro-Resets support steady thinking, calmer communication and clearer decisions throughout the school day.
