I.1 Awareness & Noticing – Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition is the skill of noticing what repeats in your day, in your energy, your reactions and the situations around you. It helps you understand the triggers and behaviours that shape how you feel and respond in school. By spotting these repeating cues, you gain insight into what is happening beneath the surface. When this skill is active, you can see early signs of pressure, strengthen what works and make small adjustments before issues escalate.

SHIFT:

Micro Habit: The Pause & Notice Habit

Use a 60-second pause at natural transition points to notice one thing that repeated today.

Ask yourself:

Q. What repeated today that caught my attention?
Q. How did that pattern affect my energy or reactions?
Q. What might this pattern be telling me?

If slipping → Choose one repeated trigger and make a small change for tomorrow.
If stretched → Spot a positive pattern and repeat it on purpose.
If steady → Keep using short check ins to stay ahead of pressure.

A tiny moment of noticing can prevent a heavy moment later.

DO:

  1. Notice one repeating moment each day.
  2. Name it in the simplest words possible.
  3. Identify one small shift you could make next time.
  4. Talk about helpful patterns with a colleague.
  5. Use natural pauses to observe rather than push through.

Small early shifts build long-term steadiness.

TOOL:

The Pattern-Spotting Triangle

A simple visual tool that breaks any pattern into three parts: what triggered it, how you responded and what impact it had. It helps make the invisible visible and supports clearer decisions.

REFLECT:

Q. Which pattern has been most visible this week?
Q. Where did a small adjustment make the biggest difference?
Q. Which pattern might still need attention?

E.g: My capacity slipped at one o’clock when I rushed a conversation.

Patterns become easier to change once you can see them clearly.

REPEAT:

Make it a habit

Choose one fixed point in your day to pause, notice and name a single pattern. Keep it simple and consistent.

Pattern Recognition strengthens emotional steadiness, clearer thinking and more confident decision making.
