We.1 Shared Purpose & Values – Values-Led Decision Making

Values-Led Decision Making is the shared practice of using agreed values to guide choices, priorities and actions, especially when pressure or uncertainty is high. It helps teams make consistent decisions that feel fair, principled and aligned, rather than reactive or inconsistent.

SHIFT:

Micro Habit: Pause for Values

Use moments of uncertainty or pressure as a cue to check decisions against values.

Ask yourself:
Q. Which values are relevant here?
Q. What decision best reflects what we stand for?
Q. How can this be explained clearly to others?

If slipping → Name the value being tested before deciding.
If stretched → Reduce the decision to its core principle.
If steady → Model values-led thinking openly.

Values provide clarity when certainty is low.

DO:

  1. Refer to values when decisions feel unclear.

  2. Name the value behind a choice out loud.

  3. Check consistency across similar decisions.

  4. Explain decisions in values-based language.

  5. Revisit decisions if values feel compromised.

Values become real through everyday decisions.

TOOL:

The Values Compass

A shared decision-making tool that helps teams align choices with agreed values, particularly when priorities compete or pressure is high.

REFLECT:

Q. When did values guide a decision well this week?
Q. Where did pressure pull decisions away from values?
Q. How clearly were values communicated in recent decisions?

E.g: A difficult choice felt fairer once we named the value it was protecting.

Reflection strengthens consistency and trust.

REPEAT:

Make it a habit

Practise naming values in everyday decisions so alignment becomes routine, not reactive.

Values are only powerful when they are used.
