You.3 Empathy & Perspective-Taking – Attunement & Co-Regulation

Attunement & Co-Regulation is the ability to notice and respond to the emotional state of others without absorbing their emotions or losing your own steadiness. It helps you stay present, grounded and responsive in interactions, especially when emotions are heightened.

SHIFT:

Micro Habit: Grounded Presence

Use moments of emotional intensity to ground yourself before responding.

Ask yourself:
Q. What am I noticing in this interaction?
Q. What belongs to me, and what belongs to them?
Q. What response would keep me steady right now?

If slipping → Ground yourself physically before speaking.
If stretched → Slow the interaction and reduce your response.
If steady → Maintain calm presence without adding or fixing.

Staying grounded helps regulate interactions without taking on emotional weight.

DO:

  1. Notice shifts in tone, pace or emotion during interactions.

  2. Ground yourself before responding.

  3. Keep your response brief and calm.

  4. Avoid fixing, advising or reassuring too quickly.

  5. End the interaction without carrying it forward unnecessarily.

Steady presence supports safe and respectful interactions.

TOOL:

The Bandwidth Barometer

A simple tool that helps you notice your emotional capacity and adjust your response to stay grounded in interactions.

REFLECT:

Q. When did I feel pulled into someone else’s emotion this week?
Q. Where did grounding myself change how an interaction unfolded?
Q. What situations challenge my ability to stay emotionally steady?

E.g: I noticed I absorbed tension during a difficult conversation and responded more sharply than intended.

Reflection helps you strengthen attunement without emotional overload.

REPEAT:

Make it a habit

Practise grounding yourself in everyday interactions so steadiness is available when emotions rise.

Attunement works best when presence and boundaries are held together.
