As the term draws to a close, it’s tempting to keep pushing through until the finish line — the final meetings, the last reports, the endless tasks that crowd the final weeks. But before switching off for the break, take a moment to pause and reflect on how you’ve managed your time, priorities, and energy this term. Reviewing your progress is an initial step for managing positive change.

This reflection is where growth happens. It’s not about perfection — it’s about noticing progress and preparing to lead more intentionally next term.

Reflect on Your Term

Start with three simple questions:

  1. What went well? Which habits helped you stay organised, calm, or focused?
  2. What felt challenging? Where did your time management slip, and why?
  3. What have you learned about yourself as a leader?

Maybe your weekly planning routine made a real difference. Or perhaps you realised your reflection time vanished once deadlines hit. Every insight helps you refine your approach for next time.

Rate Your Progress

Give yourself an honest score (1–10) in the following areas:

  • Time management
  • Prioritisation
  • Boundaries
  • Delegation
  • Reflection

Now ask:

What would it take to move each score up by just one point next term?

Small shifts — like protecting one afternoon a week for deep work or reviewing your priorities every Friday — can have a big impact on how you feel and perform.

Reconnect with Your Intentions

Look back at the goals or intentions you set at the start of term. Did you follow through? What worked? What didn’t?

Use this reflection to reset for next term:

  • Which practices will you continue because they work?
  • What will you stop because they no longer serve you?
  • What new boundary or focus will you start next term?

Reflection turns experience into progress.

Reclaim Balance

As you close out the term, give yourself permission to rest. Leadership requires energy, not just effort — and recovery is part of the work.

Step back with pride in what you’ve achieved and curiosity about what you’ll refine next. Remember, every term offers a new opportunity to strengthen your leadership rhythm.

Looking Ahead

At People First, we believe effective leadership starts with reflection and balance. Our Work and Wellbeing Coaching Programmes and Time, Priorities & Focus Toolkit help school leaders make reflection a habit, not a one-off exercise.

When schools partner with us, they gain:

  • Coaching to embed reflective practice
  • Practical tools to manage time and energy
  • Strategies to sustain wellbeing and performance across the year

Take a deep breath. Look at how far you’ve come. You’re not just managing time — you’re shaping how you lead.

As the term ends, ask yourself one final question:

“What will I do differently next term to make my time count?”

You already have the tools — now it’s about using them, one intentional week at a time.
