Have You Made Time Work for You?

A school leader sitting at a desk, holding his head in thought, representing the challenge of managing workload and the need for focus and wellbeing support. Text overlay reads “Time, Priorities & Focus Toolkit.

Six months on from our Time, Priorities & Focus Toolkit for School Leaders series, you’ve had time to reflect, experiment, and apply new approaches to managing your time and energy.

Now, it’s time for an honest check-in. Have your good intentions become lasting habits — or have the pressures of school life crept back in?

Check Your Progress

Ask yourself:

  • Which tools have you continued to use?
  • What’s working well — and what needs a reset?
  • How has your use of time affected your wellbeing, decision-making, and team relationships?

Leadership is busy by nature, but it doesn’t have to be chaotic. Sustainable leadership starts with self-awareness — knowing when to reset and when to push forward.

Rate and Reflect

Revisit your earlier self-assessment from three months ago. On a scale of 1–10, how do you score yourself now in:

  1. Time Management
  2. Prioritisation
  3. Boundaries
  4. Delegation
  5. Reflection

Where have you improved most? Where do you still feel stretched? What would it take to move just one point higher?

Build Your Six-Month Action Plan

Reflection is only powerful if it leads to action. Choose one practical change to commit to over the next half-term.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Revisit your toolkit – Pick one tool you haven’t used recently and reintroduce it (like the 4D Method or Value vs Effort Matrix).
  • Schedule reflection – Protect 20 minutes a week for planning or quiet thinking.
  • Share the learning – Encourage your middle leaders to complete their own time management reflection.
  • Reclaim boundaries – Reintroduce one wellbeing habit that’s slipped.

Write down your commitment, share it with someone you trust, and check back in at the end of term.

Six Months In – Take the Next Step

You’ve done the reflection. You’ve explored the tools. You know what works.
Now, it’s time to embed it — not as another initiative, but as a way of leading.

Ask yourself:

“If I don’t take action now, what will really change?”

You have everything you need to lead with focus, purpose, and calm. The only thing missing is the decision to begin — today.

At People First, we specialise in helping school leaders translate good intentions into lasting change. Through coaching, reflection, and practical support, we can help your leadership team make time work for them — not against them.

If your school is ready to take the next step, get in touch. Together, we can help you turn reflection into routine, and routine into lasting transformation.
