New Term, Fresh Start
The start of a new term brings both excitement and challenge. The calendar is full, priorities are shifting, and for many school leaders, the pressure builds before the first bell rings. It’s a natural moment to pause, reflect, and set intentions — not just for what you want to achieve, but for how you want to work.
This term, instead of simply planning your to-do list, take time to reset your approach to time management and prioritisation. The goal isn’t to cram more in, but to lead with calm, clarity, and focus.
Start with Reflection
Ask yourself:
- What worked well for me last term?
- When did I feel most focused and energised?
- Where did my time get lost — and why?
Reflection helps you spot patterns. Perhaps your planning time was eroded by meetings, or you spent too much energy on tasks that didn’t align with your goals. Whatever you notice, that’s your starting point for change.
Set Your Intentions for the Term Ahead
Intentions aren’t targets — they’re guiding principles. They help you lead with purpose and presence. Here are some examples to inspire your own:
- I will protect time for strategic thinking by blocking one hour each week for planning and reflection.
- I will focus on what matters most by using my Weekly Priority Planner every Monday morning.
- I will delegate more confidently, trusting my team to take ownership where appropriate.
- I will model boundaries, leaving school at a set time at least twice a week.
- I will review progress regularly to celebrate success and adjust when needed.
Choose two or three intentions that feel meaningful — and write them down. Visible goals create accountability.
Use Your Toolkit
Revisit your Time, Priorities & Focus Toolkit for School Leaders. Each tool supports a different aspect of leadership balance:
- Eisenhower Matrix – Focus on what truly matters.
- 4D Method – Simplify decisions.
- Weekly Priority Planner – Start each week with clarity.
- Time–Energy Matrix – Align tasks with your natural rhythm.
- Boundary and Reflection Planner – Protect recovery time.
Pick one to anchor your focus this term — the one that will make the biggest difference to your leadership right now.
Leadership with Intention
Setting intentions isn’t about perfection; it’s about awareness. By taking control of your time, you take control of your impact.
As you step into this new term, ask yourself:
“What kind of leader do I want to be by the end of this term — and how will my use of time reflect that?”
The answer starts with one simple action today.
